You By Caroline Kepnes

When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card.

There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.

As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder. – Synopsis taken from goodreads

You was the weirdest book I’ve read in a while and it was a good weird a really interesting and gritty good read.

I loved Joe, I really felt for him and sympathized for him even though he’s a creeper in all senses of the word. He a stalker and a perv and damn if I didn’t want him to find love. I know I know he’s mentally unsound and collects dirty underwear but we all have our quirks right? Anyone? No? okay….

Why do I want a stalker to have a happy ending? Why do I not care about all the gross and absolutely scary things he does? I thought about this for a while and in the end I just want Joe to be happy because I’m in Joe’s head. This book is from second point of view. So Joe is talking to us but we are also Beck. For example :

“If we were teenagers, I could kiss you. But I’m on a platform behind a counter wearing a name tag and we’re too old to be young.”

“You blush. You are Charlotte’s Web and I could love you.”

Also the writing is phenomenal, Joe is funny, smart, and makes a hell of a literary reference more then once, he’s also pretty damn romantic. We get to see from Joe’s point of view, his conclusions, ideas, his wants and ultimate reasons for his actions. His reasoning is quite rational if you let yourself into his state of mind.

The writing is amazing. What other Author has ever created a character so completely different from me that I can understand and sympathize with?! He is a stalker, a murderer, and a creep but little old 22 year old me found myself walking in his shoes and understanding his messed up reasoning’s.

Beck our female “love interest” annoyed me to no end and I found myself wanting Joe to move on and not deal with her as I though it would end bad. Let me just put it out there I didn’t want her to be out of the picture for her safety but rather I didn’t want Joe to do something bad and get caught for it.

I just wanted Joe to be happy when in reality he should go to jail or a psych ward.

This book really made me feel things I’ve never felt before when I’ve been reading. Am I crazy for wanting a stalker to have a happy ending? Or is it just amazing writing that has made me feel sympathetic for a psycho. I’m hoping it’s the writing XD

Questions:

Have you read this? or Have you connected with a un sympathetic character in any other books?

I’d love to know what you thought of Joe’s character and if you felt the same way as me or if your feeling that I’m crazy and should stop following my blog in case I follow you home and steal your used tissues.

    1. It’s really amazing how the Author was able to warp me into not only rooting for Joe but really really liking him. He has barely any redeeming qualities besides being well read but I found him to be one of my favourite male leads I’ve read (although in no way book boyfriend material 😂) I hope you pick it up! I’d love to see what you think of it ☺️

I’ll have to come add my response here after I’ve read it!
