Illuminae By Amie Koufmen & Jay Kristoff

9781780748375This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.
This afternoon, her planet was invaded.
The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

GUYS THIS BOOKS IS ALL THE AMAZINGS IN ONE AND DESERVES ALL THE STARS IN THE ENTIRE ****ING ‘VERSE

You know that book that you sacrifice sleep for getting 4 hours sleep even though you know you have to be awake at 8 am for? You know the one that just sucks you in and you can’t stop until you know whats going on? The one that is perfectly paced, The one you start developing bi polar over! Laughing, on the edge of tears, finding perfect lines in every chapter and wanting to buy a t-shirt filled with quotes so you can broadcast your love? WELL that was Illuminae for me.

A cyclonic mess of adventures, A whirlwind of problems, A stunning cast of characters, A unbelievable and incredible ending. A fantastic book.

Illuminae is a unique story set on 2 battleships running from the Lincoln a ship commanded by Biotech that has just invaded Kady and Ezra’s planet and are blowing it to smithereens.

The Alexander and Hypatia have heard the distress call and are coming to the rescue. Now full of Kerenza refugees and more importantly our shining main characters Kady and Ezra, they must get away from BioTech or be wiped out as well.

Kady and Ezra broke up this morning, perhaps not the smartest timing but hey they didn’t know there planet was going to get ****ed up by BioTech.

“Ezra: And then I said it.
Interviewer: What did he say?
Kady Grant: He said, You picked a hell of a day to dump me, Kades.”

Kady and Ezra are refugees on different ships and both are months away from the nearest jump station that allows the ship to travel through a wormhole to another part of the universe.
Now 6 months with an extra couple 1000 refugees on a ship that has depleting Air and Food supplies isn’t the worst of their concerns. They are being chased by the remaining Biotech ship AND the Alexanders AI AIDEN who protects them and runs their defense and attack grid has gone haywire.

“Um, because you’re loopier than Flacky McPsycho, Mayor of Crazytown?”

“My databases show no record of this Crazytown of which you speak. A brain the size of an entire city burns inside me. My intelligence quotient is beyond the human scale. I would prefer if you did not refer to me in such a fashion.”

“Oh, poor baby. Did I hurt the mass-murdering psychopathic artificial intelligence’s feelings?”

Oh an did I mention there is a plague on board that is turning everyone into crazy Jack from the Shining? Because yeah there’s that to.

Fantastic book and horrible movie if you were wondering

Told through data logs, IM’s, and camera feed transcripts this story just ****ing rocks and I suggest anyone and EVERYONE that loves sci fy read this.

Characters: All of the characters are absolutely perfect, have a distinct voice and personality and so much chemistry and banter.

Ezra: My little darling goof

“Interviewer: So. Tell me about your mother.
Ezra: You’re taping this, right?
Interviewer: Audio only. Camera is faulty.
Ezra: Okay, well for the benefit of the sight-impaired, I am now raising my… oh, dear… yes, it’s my MIDDLE finger at Mr. Postgrad here.
Interviewer: Mr. Mason…
Ezra: Now I’m wiggling it.
Interviewer: Terminating interview at 13:58 on 03/19/75.
Ezra: Look at it wiggl-
-audio ends-”

Kady: My kickarse computer whiz

“Some people, when they lose it, they scream, they fight. I hope that would be me”

AIDEN: You crazy arse artificial intelligence that scares the crap out of me even though I kind of love you?

“Numbers do not feel. Do not bleed or weep or hope. They do not know bravery or sacrifice. Love and allegiance. At the very apex of callousness, you will find only ones and zeros.”

Even if you don’t love Sci-Fy I’d still recommend it.

JUST READ ITTTTTTTTT!

For a story told by transcripts and IM’s the amount of details was amazing, to be honest the details were better because we could know everything and had no barriers on what we could see, the characters are well-developed, have fantastic character growth and are just hilarious.

If anyone needs me I’ll be over here yelling about Illuminae until I have my hands on Gemina and I can yell about that instead *sobs quietly and lays in wait until 18/10/2016*

P.S all the stars out of 5

  1. Although I did not enjoy this book as much as most people, I can say I loved all the characters just as much as you did! Is that a thing? I think so but I just wanted to let you know that I loved your review and found it very entertaining!

    1. That’s definitely a thing! The characters were fantastic and made the story so much better then it could have been. I love Sci fy and the setting just gripped me from the start to finish I couldn’t put it down XD

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂 I waited a day to write it to try to wrap my head around what I was feeling so I didn’t just write a post containing only exclamation marks XD haha

  2. I’ve been so hesitant about this book since I haven’t read a ton of Sci-Fi… Now I”m conflicted. Ugh!!! Why must you use so many exclamation points and give so many stars?!? I have no room left on my TBR pile 😭

    1. I love Sci Fy and this book did it so well, it still contains the YA romance and action elements but the setting was fantastic in my opinion. HAH I tried to keep the exclamation marks to a minimum, you should have seen my un edited review I think it had more exclamation marks then letters XD lmao.

Read it if you can squeeze it in, I’d love to know what you think of it not being a big Sci Fy fan 😀

  3. Why do you keep writing these amazing reviews, making me want to read those books very badly? I’m getting excited about this book and I don’t even read Sci-Fi much! Going to squeeze this in to my already huge TBR list. I’m gonna say it again: great review.😁

    1. I think the real question is why do people keep writing such amazing book! 😆😂 I’m so happy your going to pick this up, can’t wait to hear what you think of it ☺️ oh my TBR list is heaving and keeps growing even after I went through it and got rid of some that I didn’t want on there anymore 😅 Thank you 😊

  4. hahaha omg I love the heart ❤ I'm so glad you loved this book! It's truly unlike anything I've ever read, and I can't believe that it's not wildly popular at this point. Gemina NEEDS to come out ASAP!!!

    1. I could have read it in one sitting if I had the time I went through it in 2 days, the page count is high but a lot of the pages are designs and pictures I think if you were to format this book like a normal novel you could squeeze it down to 400 pages ☺️☺️
Thanks Nina! I hope you enjoy it when you get to it 😀

  5. I’ve wanted to read this for a while now. I pre-ordered Nevernight because the US copies are signed, but I still haven’t read one of his books. I’m glad to see another rave review for this book. It makes me want to push it up higher on my TBR.

    1. I loved it! I haven’t pre-ordered Never Night yet because I’m holding out hope there will be some copies at his book launch I’m attending but if there’s not I’ll be pre-ordering as well 🙂 Illuminae is just so different and fantastic to anything I’ve ever read, I can’t wait for Gemina 😀

      1. I know a few bloggers lucky enough to get an ARC, and so far, they’re really enjoying Nevernight. I normally read all ebooks, so I’m pretty excited to get my first hardcover in almost two years. Oh, that’s so fun. I hope you get a copy. I’ve heard good things about Gemina. My friend raves about this series.

        1. I requested an acr but haven’t heard back so I’m guessing I didn’t get it! I was only reading ebooks until halfway through last year because I had no space where I was living for real books. When we moved I new I had to start building my physical collection again so I’m slowly building a library 🙂

          1. I guess they don’t send an email when it’s direct from the publisher. I haven’t tried to request ARCs direct from the publisher yet. I only requested them from NetGalley, and I think I’ve only gotten approved for one that wasn’t an instant download. I think I’m always too late to request them. I signed up for OwlCrate to build my physical library. I now have 3 hardback books that I still need to read and Nevernight coming in August. I’m really excited for that book. Not so much about the OwlCrate books.

            1. I got owlcrate once but the international shipping kills it! I get the YA chronicles now and like it but there mainly paperbacks 🙂 I’m trying limit my NetGalley requests, sometimes(all the time) I go crazy and get too many on my shelf and lose interest in them!
I hope we both enjoy NevrNight the synopsis sounds fantastic and I can’t wait to learn more about the MC

              1. I can’t even imagine the shipping to Australia. It costs me $6 and they’re only sending it across the country. I went overboard and requested 7 NetGalley books all at once because I got excited. I didn’t realize at the time that it affects your rating and chance of getting more ARCs. I still have 2 books I need to read and review from 2 months ago. Another blogger posted the opening line to Nevernight on Twitter, and it sounds amazing. So blunt and brutally honest. Jay Kristoff seems like a really cool guy. He responds to tweets from fans, which is so cool. I love authors like that. It makes me want to read all of their books when an author communicates with their fans.

                1. Ahh same as me! I’m slowly working through and trying to catch up to improve my rating 😂 I think that too! I like that he’s so down to earth and connects with his readers it means a lot I can’t wait to meet him and hear more about what he’s working on ☺️

  6. LOVE your review Casey! I’ve just picked Illuminae up now and though I’m only about 100 or so pages in it is incredible! I am so ashamed I didn’t pick this epic read up sooner! Katy is just so snarky and bad assed and oh boy do I relate to Ezra! I almost wet myself with the “finger” interview – classic!

    1. Kady is such a strong and amazing character and Ezra is hilarious to the interviewer! I cracked up at that part to XD Seriously this whole series is epic, Gemina is just as good and I was worried about having new MC’s but I loved the new ones just as much 😀 Plus the format amazes me with how much effort and thought is put into every page 😀 I hope you love the book once your finished 😀

      1. I’ve just got back from an impromptu road trip up the Great Ocean Road (finally got to see the 12 apostles! :D) and I didn’t want to take my copy to the beach – heaven forbid I crinkle a page or crease the cover! – so I haven’t made much progress but I’ve caught a cold so I plan to spend most of tomorrow snuggled up reading and blogging. I can’t wait to continue – this is a book that really hooks you in and I find I just can’t stop reading. Colds do have their silver linings – at least I can be left in peace to read haha

        1. The 12 Apostles are beautiful so I hope you had a great time! I drive down there a few times a year when I visit my Grandparents 😀 I wouldn’t take that book to the beach either I mean the catastrophes that could happen 0.0 nope nope XD I’m so glad your loving it! I’d like to say get better soon but hey you can’t knock back some reading time 😀

          1. Exactly hahaha colds may such but they do have their uses! I’ve been down as far as Apollo Bay and Lorne before but never as far as the 12 Apostles and the Otways but it is stunning! If I had money that’s where I would live haha
