EVERY DAY THE SAME
Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Spoiler-free Summary

Divorced, depressed, drinking problems, and fired this is Rachel’s life now that her husbands left her and she’s living in a flat with an old school friend.
Rachel catches the train everyday at peak hour not only to keep up the illusion that she still has a job but because she likes the train.

She likes the uniformness of it and if I was going to go into deeper meaning you could say it is the one thing in her life that she can always depend on. She can depend on the train stopping at the broken signal everyday, she can depend on looking out of the window and seeing the same flower lined windows and symmetrical houses.

 

Looking out the train window everyday Rachel notices a couple and starts to like them, she likes the way they seem so happy and carefree and continues to look out for them everyday the train passes by their house. One day she notices things aren’t quite right with her couple and something terrible has happened.

Rachel thinks she’s seen something that could help with the case but being labeled as an unreliable witness, she must figure out what is happening with out the police’s help and in doing so gets herself caught up in the ugliest case of neighbors gone wrong that we’ve seen in a while.

My Thoughts

I have to say while I liked the story I wasn’t engaged in it. The Girl on the Train didn’t make me want to turn the pages! I wasn’t rushing towards the ending to finally KNOW what happens but I did enjoy it kind of.

The Girl on the Train is told from MPOV and jumps between the years in a flawless way filling in gaps and letting the characters develop and grow into so much more than they seem at first.
In saying this I didn’t like any of the characters and that made me like them if that makes sense? Because the characters are so realistic they’re also pretty un-likable for me but I liked that they had there flaws.

All three characters are unreliable: keeping secrets, drunk, paranoid, and plain crazy sometimes. Hearing from them in MPOV that jumps between the years was interesting and led to the build up and the slow reveal of what the characters were really like.

I half read this and half listened to the audio-book which is fantastic! I loved the actresses. The voices and portrayal of the characters are flawless.

As suspense and thrillers goes this definitely checks all the boxes but for me it just didn’t give me the need to find out what happened, and even though I guessed the ending halfway through I still loved how it played out.

I gave this a 3.7 on goodreads but after thinking about it I wouldn’t recommend it to people looking for a thriller and I won’t be reading it again so I’ve put my rating down. I’m glad I didn’t pick this up when all the hype was going on because I would have been really disappointed!
