You know those books where you were hoping to love it but you just couldn’t? I mean I didn’t hate this but this book just bored me. I get it I do it’s deep and thought provoking and blah but I was just like meh through the whole thing.
I really enjoyed the friendships and the descriptions but I was just waiting for a big reveal and I felt it was all just so predictable (which I guess was the point but still…)
More Than This is the story of Seth and the journey he takes. Seth has drowned in our opening scene, he’s died and then mysteriously wakes up in his childhood home all the way across the ocean in England.
As he tackles his head and tries to work his way around this strange and abandoned new place he mets two other kids to help him on his journey.
With out the supporting characters in this book I don’t think I would have enjoyed it as much as I did, the first 100 pages with just Seth was a struggle for me to pick up the book and want to read it.
Around the middle of the book we picked up pace, all the characters grew and their friendships deepend. I loved seeing them work out the mystery and just interacting with each other.
I didn’t like the ambiguios ending, I know why Patrick Ness did it and I appreciate the more than this theme of us not knowing whats more otherwise we’d have it all and then what is there to strive for? At least that’s what I thought the point was. I was just too curious and wanted more answers.
3/5 stars I wanted to love this after adoring The Rest Of Us Just Live here but unfortunatly I couldn’t.
I still can’t wait to read more of Patrick Ness’s work and hopefully enjoy it as much as I did reading The Rest Of Us Just Live Here 🙂

I think your review is the first non “OMG 5 BILLION STARS IT’S AMAZING!!!!111!!!” review I’ve read for this book! It’s refreshing and gives me a much better idea of the story (there’s nothing wrong with gushing reviews, I write a tonne! These middle line reviews just tend to give a better idea of all aspects of the story and makes a super hyped book less intimidating).

Hahah I think so too 🙈 so many people loved this and I hoped I would but I just couldn’t fall into the story 😅 Im glad you liked the review I can definitely see why people gush so much about this book though

As you know, I haven’t had a lot of luck with Patrick Ness in general, so I’m not surprised to see this review (personally). That said, I’m sorry this didn’t work out for you! I know you really loved The Rest of Us Just Live Here. Do you feel like you understood Ness’s message? Would you recommend this book to anyone in particular?

To be honest I’m not sure who I’d recommend this book to because I thought I would recommend it to myself and that didn’t work out 😅 i think most people will and already have loved it. I understood the message but I just wasn’t in the mood to appreciate it I wanted more for the plot line but it’s very character based which isn’t a bad thing but was not for me esp with the type of world he created I wanted more explanations and came up empty 🙁

Sorry this came up a bit short for you. I have definitely wanted to explore more of Patrick Ness’ work after reading A Monster Calls a few months ago, but many of his other books have mixed reviews. I’ve heard good things about his Chaos Walking series…

I just finished A Monster Calls! ITS SO AMAZING, I loved the story and instantly handed it to one of my good friends who eneded up loving it as well 🙂 It’s just so beautiful I can’t wait to see the movie soon.
I was hoping to like this one more but they can’t all be winners 🙂 I have the first book in the Chaos series so I can’t wait to give that one a go too

This is a rally interesting idea, but it just isn’t my cup of tea. I’ve had two disappointments with Ness’s works, so it isn’t on my TBR. I feel like most of the reviews I’ve read have followed your thoughts though. You aren’t alone!

I liked his past book but this one was just really underwhelming for me, his writing has been hit or miss so far. I have The Knife of Never Letting Go on my shelf but I’m a bit reluctant about picking it up now as I don’t know if I’m going to enjoy it.
In my opinion you’re not really missing out on anything with this read, it tries very hard to be deep but I just couldn’t connect to the message or characters.
I’ve seen heap of people gushing about this book! Seems like I need to follow the people your following so I don’t get hyped for a book like this again XD

Hahaha! I think that’s inevitable, though. We will certainly fall for the hype again with some new pretty book– I try to avoid the hype, but I find sometimes I fail at it. Oh well. We can’t love them all.

I thought More Than This was an okay read – it wasn’t bad but it didn’t blow me away. It was relatively engaging and entertaining but I didn’t really connect with any of the characters and the direction o the plot was… peculiar. That said, personally I did like the ambiguous ending.

I can go either way with ambiguous ending but as I wasn’t feeling this book from the start I was let down by it and wanted something mind blowing to happen because so many people hyped me for it
I liked the idea and could see how everyone loved it but yeah I just didn’t connect or really care 0.0 XD

Fair enough. I think I enjoyed it more because I didn’t expect anything of it – the only hype I’d heard was surrounding Patrick Ness himself.

I think coz i read his other book a lot of people told me about this one and how they loved it more xD I shouldn’t let hype get my hopes up but it always seems to!

Ah, that sounds about right. It’s like how you want to read the author’s best works first but then you might be disappointed with their earlier publications? It’s hard

Thats one of the reasons I sometimes dont pick up an authors earlier work Like the stormdancer books by Jay Kristoff or Archieved by VE Schwab(although I might still pick those up) I just feel like I’ll compare them to much to their newer books

Yeah, I feel you on that. No matter how excited I am about an author’s shiny new book if they sound interesting I do try and read the older works first.
