As long as her father has a map for it, he can sail to any time, any place, real or imagined: nineteenth-century China, the land from One Thousand and One Nights, a mythic version of Africa. Along the way they have found crewmates and friends, and even a disarming thief who could come to mean much more to Nix.

But the end to it all looms closer every day.

Her father is obsessed with obtaining the one map, 1868 Honolulu, that could take him back to his lost love, Nix’s mother. Even though getting it—and going there—could erase Nix’s very existence.

For the first time, Nix is entering unknown waters.

This book was fantastic, a story of Nix a girl who has been sailing with her Father and their crew all her life, going to far away places, finding maps to different times and navigating to them, even going to mythical versions of islands and seeing the myths come to life, all in search for a map back to her birth year. Nix’s Dad lost his love, her mum when Nix was born, killed by an infection that he could have cured he will always regret not being there to help and dedicates his life to finding a way back to his love.

I went in with very small expectations because, well it’s so under hyped and I got so much out of it! I mean is just so much to love, let’s make a list shall we:

  • Time Travel (done in a real cool way that didn’t make my mind break trying to understand it)
  • Mythology SO MANY MYTHS I have never even heard about and I loved them all
  • A smartass love interest that reminded me of Alucard from AGOS but also was so unique too
  • Family! Such a close-knit family
  • Pirates
  • Hawaii and Hawaiian based mythology
  • Heists
  • General thieving and pick pocketing
  • A TINY NECK DRAGON
  • More mythical creatures
  • Diverse cast

Nix alone as a main character didn’t amaze me but I definitely liked her, she was just missing a certain spark and that stopped me from loving her. Kash made up for my thoughts of Nix in tenfold though! A smartass, a flirt, a damn good thief he reminded me of a mix between Captain Sparrow and Alucard but with his distinct flair mixed in to make him such unique and interesting character.

This really could stand alone but I’m so interested to see what will happen in the next book!

Recommend for anyone that loves well done time travel, SHIPS OF THE PIRATE KIND, Smart ass love interests, thieves, and mythical creatures.

    1. My thoughts exactly! Halfway through I was just baffled about why more people weren’t yelling about this book! Time travel, mythology, pirates, heists! What more is needed XD I loved the next even more then this so I hope you do to ❤

  5. Halfway through this now, though I don’t think I’ll be able to finish by the end of the month, no time 😭 I’m loving the writing, Hawaiin setting and time travel aspects!

  7. “A smartass love interest that reminded me of Alucard from AGOS but also was so unique too” that plus the mention of pirates and heists! I officially need to read this book now. I’ve seen the cover floating around but never paid much attention to it before. Now I’m wondering why because it sounds like a book I could love. I’m going to go run and add it to my TBR lol.     1. The time travel is pretty simplistic (basically if they have a map there ship can sail to the time that map was drawn) some timetravel books just make it so complicated and unbelievable I end up confused most of the book XD

    1. It’s done so well I loved it, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started but the time traveling ship mixed with mythology was such an adventure! And the whole cast of characters are awesome 😀 I hope you love it when you read them ❤

  10. Yay! So happy you enjoyed this one! I read it last year and really enjoyed it as well. I thought it was very original and unique. The time travel elements were so creative and well done.

    I agree that Nix wasn't exactly loveable… she was a little dull in comparison to some of her secondary characters. Hopefully she steps it up in the next book.

    1. I thought she stepped up a bit in the next book and loved it even more then this 🙂 It’s such an original story I’m surprised there isn’t more hype surrounding it!

  11. Right?! TINY NECK DRAGON! I love that there are so many amazing little things in this book. I personally loved the history. I don’t know much about Hawai’i’s history, so it was really interesting as a setting for me. Plus, you’re right, the time travel didn’t make my head spin, which was a bonus.

    I actually really enjoyed Nix’s personality. She felt like who she was. No, she wasn’t lovable. But she was the daughter of an opium addict who stole her away from her home and has provided no explanation to her past. She’s the strong silent type to everyone else. I can’t remember the last time I saw that in a female protagonist. If ever!

    1. The dragon the little light fishes it was all just awesome! I loved the setting too 😀
      She is the strong silent type, I really enjoyed her in the next book and felt like I could see more of her characteristic for what they were, while in this one the crew just outshone her in my eyes.
