June Wrap Up and Haul

I am late… oops. I HAD AN AWESOME JUNE THOUGH I just suck and have been unmotivated at blogging this past week, plus EOFY killed me I am so glad that mess of a work month is done.

Now to what I read and how far I strayed from my TBR. I read a total of 12 books and 5 of them were on my set TBR! I ended up ditching a few books so I could binge read the Every Series by Ellie Marney, which is an awesome aussie Sherlock retelling.

Books I read and loved!

25786523The Long way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

I adored this book, the space, the alien races, all the different cultures, the use of pronouns, and the pacing. The plot isn’t epic or edge of your seat but it just flowed so well + Artificial intelligence *heart eyes* I haven’t met a robot I don’t like, yes even the evil ones.

15839976Red Rising by Pierce Brown

THIS BOOK, man I’ve had this book on my TBR for years and I finally picked it up! I adored Darrow as a main and the world, the mixture of gods and colour systems, the intense war training, and of course SPACE THINGS. Have I mentioned my pure unconditional love I have with powered armor?

77197Assassins Apprentice by Robin Hobb

Better late then never hey? I really liked this book, the world building, the magic system, the characters. I did read it quite slowly because it’s not very fast paced but I can’t wait to pick up the next book and see where this story takes me.

These three went straight to my faves, Sci fi, Fantasy, stabby characters, caring characters, just all the awesomeness and I’d rec them to everyone.

30844667Begin End Begin, A loveozya Anthology

Amazing ozya babies! I finished the Anthology and loved nearly every story! Look out for a post of mini reviews on each short.

A mixture of sci fi, fantasy, contemporary, magical realism, time travel? All the stories are so fifferent and fantastic, I loved the diversity and of course how Aussie the entire thing is.

The Every trilogy by Ellie Marney

Now for the trilogy that derailed my planned tbr. The anthology actually included a story of Watts and Mycroft meeting and I was over the moon to know there was a completely trilogy staring these amazing characters. The only thing I dislike about shorts is when they’re good I don’t want them to end and luckily this story was just the beginning.

26836910The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid

We all have to have some 3 star books in our diet right? I mean how else would we be able to know just how amazing a 5 star book is without them.  I have to admit after reading all the above mentioned awesome sci-fi The Diabolic just didn’t do it for me 😦 See my full thought here

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

This was super cute but really plain jane. I liked the characters, the love interest, the cosplaying but it didn’t sweep me off my feet and give me that happy buzz that contemporaries leave me with.

cover111177-mediumUnder the Spectrum by Jennifer Gold

This was an e-arc and I didn’t love it but it does pick up towards the middle. I have very mixed feelings but this book does deal with eating disorders and the main characters half-brother is autistic, although I didn’t really like her and felt some of the things that moved the plot forward was predictable and circumstantial I did like that it had some heavier themes. Full thoughts on that soon.

8727968Horns by Joe Hill

I really enjoy Joe Hill’s work and this book really turned him into an auto buy author. The humans being evil and revenge plot had me hooked from the start. I also watched the movie and really liked the movie adaptation! Yes changes were made but I felt it all help translate it really well.

I was lucky enough to receive an earc to this book and OH MAN I LOVED IT. I sobbed, I laughed, I wanted to be part of the main characters family and had sever Donut cravings. Well worth staying up to the am’s on a work day xD

 Haul

I’ve been doing okay-ish with my book spending and really trying to tame my hauls, compared to last year I’m doing fantastically BUT my TBR still feels like it’s a mountain I’ll never be able to fully conquer.

I purchased 5 of these, I’m tempted to not include the Every series as they’re on ebook but that’s cheating so oops, it was worth it though.

As I’m doing project 5 (read 5 books buy 1) I am starting to fall behind 0.0 I am up to 18 purchased books this year and I’ve read 64 so I’m 26 books behind what I should be.

At this point I’m probably not going to bother trying to catch up and “win” project 5 because there is no hope, but I’ll continue count how many books I do buy because it helps me kerb my impulse buys.

How was your July! Have you read any of the books I did or any that I’ve hauled? What book did you love the most? Mine has to be A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet.

  1. When I read “it helps me kerb my impulse buys”, YES PROJECT FIVE TOTALLY DOES THAT FOR ME TOO! I’m more books behind than you I think, ahaha. Oh well, it’s definitely helping my impulse purchases. And likewise I feel my TBR will crush me regardless. What can ya do.
Such an awesome wrap up, you read so much, WHEW! ❤ I'm beyond chuffed that the first 3 books are now on your faves list. Hobb made it. ❤

    1. I had bought 30 books JUST for my birthday hail last year so project 5 is helping a fair bit XD I’m going to continue it next year but by doing pages instead so I can actually win the thing!
The more I think back on Assassins apprentice the more I like it and I know I’d reread and recommend it to people so it’s easily a fave even if I did struggle a little with the narration/pacing. Thank ya ❤

      1. Ooh yay I’m so proud! It’s really a book that sits in your soul after you read it, there’s so much detail that it’s really easy to get lost in it rethinking the pages! It’s why I love Hobb, even though her books aren’t as fast paced as my usual reads. ❤
Pages sounds like a good idea! Though I'd probably still fail at that hahaha! XD

  2. Yaaaay I’m so glad you liked Red Rising!!! The rest of the series will BLOW YOUR MIND!!!! I have the Diabolic on my bookshelf, I keep putting it off. Maybe it will be a rainy day read 🙂 I loved Horns and the movie was awesome as well! Very different to what I would normally read and was pleasantly surprised!!

Oh and don’t even talk to my about EOFY…aaarrrgggghhhh!!!! Seems you had a great month though, awesome post!!

  3. You got through some amazing books this month Casey. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and Red Rising are two favourites of mine so I’m thrilled you loved them, also I own Geekerella and The Diabolic but I still have them on my to-read list. One day I’ll get around to them, and I hope I enjoy them as much as you did. 🙂
Also great haul, I’m excited to see what you think of Our Dark Duet, and A Closed and Common Orbit which is another book I own but that’s still on my to-read list 😀
I hope you have a great July. 🙂

    1. Such amazing books!! I’m kicking myself for waiting so long to read them but I just adored them both so much I’m not to made XD I can’t wait to start A Closed and common orbit, Becky’s writing is fantastic and her characters are all so amazing!

I love schwab so there’s no doubt i’ll love ODD and I can’t believe we’re getting two series endings from her in the same year?! My hearts still not healed from ACOL hopefully this one doesn’t damage me to much XD

      Thank you Beth! ❤

      1. I do that with loads of books that I leave on my TBR list for ages, I’ll probably do it with loads that are still on my TBR list too. They really are, and I’m sure ACACO will be even more amazing! 🙂
Neither can I, this does mean that hopefully next year we’ll get a new series from her, which I am very excited for at the moment. 🙂
        That’s all right! 😀 ❤️

  4. When I was first scrolling through, I thought this is like MY own read-list 😀 A Long Way is a wonderful book… I wish I could read it for the first time, again! (No, I don’t want amnesia. I know it doesn’t work that way.) I’m also still reading Assassin’s Apprentice with my boyfriend (that’s why we can’t quite finish it, still), and I have Red Rising on my TBR. Don’t have / haven’t read the others, but I’ve heard of a great deal of them 🙂

    1. BAHAHA! Your own read list is looking good then XD A Long Way was so so good I can’t wait to read book 2. Oh I hope you’re both loving Assassins Apprentice, it’s took me ages to get through but I liked it nonetheless. Red Rising is fantastic I hope you love it as much as I did ❤

      1. Oh no. Don’t hype book 2. I just read it and it’s very different. You might like it, but only if you let it be a standalone. And no, no Wayfarer crew T_T I’ve recently posted a review of it. Most of us wanted A Long Way 2, but it’s not really what it is.
Whoops, forgot to follow yesterday 🙂

    1. I think you’re going to LOVE the Every series, I hadn’t read any YA mystery but I adored it. Its very gritty (esp book 2&3) and I liked that it didn’t keep things super tame. Red Rising and Long way were on my TBR for so long I’m so glad I finally read them and the hype didn’t disappoint 🙂 Thank ya Lauren ❤ ❤

    1. I need to pick up the next two books soon! I liked it a lot more then I was expecting, the characters and story is so well done and I loved all the conflict and class systems. I hope you like it when you start it 🙂
