Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

Assassin Mia Corvere has found her place among the Blades of Our Lady of Blessed Murder, but many in the Red Church ministry think she’s far from earned it. Plying her bloody trade in a backwater of the Republic, she’s no closer to ending Consul Scaeva and Cardinal Duomo, or avenging her familia. And after a deadly confrontation with an old enemy, Mia begins to suspect the motives of the Red Church itself.

When it’s announced that Scaeva and Duomo will be making a rare public appearance at the conclusion of the grand games in Godsgrave, Mia defies the Church and sells herself to a gladiatorial collegium for a chance to finally end them. Upon the sands of the arena, Mia finds new allies, bitter rivals, and more questions about her strange affinity for the shadows. But as conspiracies unfold within the collegium walls, and the body count rises, Mia will be forced to choose between loyalty and revenge, and uncover a secret that could change the very face of her world.

If you haven’t read my Nevernight review, you should turn back now or go here and enjoy that review because there will be spoils for the first book.

NOW into Godsgrave DEAR GOD HELP ME. You know when you read a book that’s so epic, so well written, so action packed, you step back and not only wonder at how amazing it is but also get filled with the inspiration to write something just as epic one day? Yeah that, I felt that. Then came the soul crushing how can any other book ever live up to this stage. Well welcome to my mix of feelings while I devoured this book. If you’ve read Illuminae and then had your mind blown by Gemina the feeling is that one, that painful ah I need the next book now feeling.

Re cap: Mia is a blade for the red church, a sworn killer/mercenary. Given elite and important marks as the church has been seriously impacted after a student betrayed the location of the churches and all the newly pledged blades were poisoned she’s kinda all they have.

10 pages in and we’re thrown back into Mia’s story, her smartassary, her cleverness, the way she can fight and deceive. It’s completely epic and the plot line is non stop. We’re left on the knife point every page, the risks seem to be the highest they’ll get and then shoot up a 100 more feet. Seriously there is a battle or fist fight every other chapter and a good deal of smut. This is the fantasy I am here for.

Mia Covere, the darkin, the orphan, the lover, the killer. After Nevernight if you told me I could love her more I wouldn’t believe you, I already loved her so much. But now, my god, I can’t get enough. As much as I’d hate to wait 7 years for this story to conclude I would because I want all the books, 3 books of Mia aren’t enough, I could happily read her forever.

The writing is fanfuckingtastic, Mister Kindly is snarky as usual and the narrator is the same hilarious asshole. I have a thing for self-deprecating narrator humor, being told in a footnote WHY ARE YOU READING THIS THERE’S A BATTLE ABOUT TO BEGIN just makes me in love with the book even more.

A million out of 5, Godgrave is my new favourite epic fantasy, I am sorry Locke Lamora I love your guts to bits but Mia would chew you up and spit you out before you could bluff your way around it. I shouldn’t pin my favourite fantasies against each other xD They are all epic and awesome in their own ways, but seriously? Mia beats ’em all on sheer will power, punching, and heart alone.

Give me smart ass not cats, caring shadow wolves, bi sexual kick ass woman, and all the emotion and fear in between.

5/5 stars all the stars, seriously we’ve gone beyond stars, the hype is real people.

Have you sold your soul for Godsgrave? Or, you know gone about the conventional way and ran to the book store? Are you waiting for your copy to arrive so you can devour all the stabby goodness!? Let me know all the thoughts, incoherent capslock screaming is always welcomed ❤

  2. Great review for this book Casey. I’ve read Godsgrave and loved it the same as you did. I thought it was an incredible book to carry on the trilogy, better than Nevernight in my opinion. 🙂
A million stars out of five is an accurate rating, and oh I loved the footnotes. The one about the battle happening in the main part of story while I read the footnotes seriously made me laugh! 😀
    Again great review. 🙂 ❤️

    1. I was cackling at that part! The footnotes were definitely funnier in Godsgrave and the ACTION I wasn’t expecting it to be so intense, this trilogy is so good and I love it so much. Glad to hear you loved it too! Mia is super kickass and all the relationships and conflicts or messy and awesome.
