Lovelace was once merely a ship’s artificial intelligence. When she wakes up in a new body, following a total system shut-down and reboot, she has no memory of what came before. As Lovelace learns to negotiate the universe and discover who she is, she makes friends with Pepper, an excitable engineer, who’s determined to help her learn and grow.
Together, Pepper and Lovey will discover that no matter how vast space is, two people can fill it together.
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet introduced readers to the incredible world of Rosemary Harper, a young woman with a restless soul and secrets to keep. When she joined the crew of the Wayfarer, an intergalactic ship, she got more than she bargained for – and learned to live with, and love, her rag-tag collection of crewmates.
I love this universe and this writing a whole lot ❤️ Hearts for all.
Slight spoilers for book 1 – check out that review instead if you haven’t 🙂
“She felt as though she could reach out to that little girl and pull her through the years. Look, she’d say. Look who you’re gonna be. Look where you’re gonna go. Jane”
I was surprised by A Closed and Common Orbit but not disappointed. This companion follows a side character from the first book on a new and crazy journey and lets us know so much more about Pepper and Blue (also side characters in Small Angry Planet).
Pepper really stole the show for me, we learn about her childhood in flashbacks, what she had to do to escape a life born into slavery, what she had to do to be her, to get off a godforsaken planet that didn’t care how she was treated. Pepper is caring, on task, and amazing. Seriously Pepper could punch me and I’d say thank you, she’s one of my fave characters I’ve read. Becky is amazing at creating such deep characters that I can’t help but fall in love with them.
While this book doesn’t have the amazing cast that had me head over heals in love with the first book the characters are still great and their relationships complex and interesting to explore.
Becky Chambers world building is incredible, not just in the universe she created but the species, the use of pronouns, the aliens different views on gender, parents, family. This whole universe makes my heart happy and I’d like a rocket ship there please? Thank you.
Asides from Peppers childhood being shown we followed Sidra, formally Lovelace the ships AI learning how to pass for human and who she really is. Another character I enjoyed was Tak, I loved having an Aeloun as a prominent character especially when they are gender fluid and switch between she, he, and xry pronouns depending on their appearance. I just love all the alien culture really, *gimme detailed history lessons on everyone I will be more than happy* XD
While this book didn’t have the big friends are the best family or as much sass as the first that made em have heart eyes for all, it still stands up on its own for me and it was unique and different from anything else I’ve read.
4/5 Stars
I’m so excited for another book by Becky Chambers, she is quickly one of my fave sci fi authors and is a new Auto buy author for me.
I haven’t read Small angry planet yet and this is the first time I heard about this series 😱 Sounds really fun to read! I love reading about android hhaha

Trang! You’re going to absolutely adore it, the first book is amazing and all the different aliens and their cultures just make my heart happy. It’s not as action-y as some sci fi’s but the universe and focus on friendship and AI rights it’s so great ❤

I love both the books so much. While I’m desperate for more stories from the Wayfarer, I loved Closed and Commin Orbit. I’m waiting impatiently for the third instalment. (She had an awesome article on the Tor website not long ago about writing sci-fi if you’re interested https://www.tor.com/2017/03/14/my-alien-family-writing-across-cultures-in-science-fiction/

Great review for this book Casey. 🙂 Small Angry Planet was a book I read last year and LOVED. I was so excited there was a companion novel being released, but now despite owning it I still haven’t gotten around to A Closed and Common Orbit.
One day…
Reading your review has definitely made me want to pick it up more. I am thrilled to hear Becky Chambers’ world building is just as incredible in this book as the first. It was that aspect that stood out for me so much in Small Angry Planet! 😀

I can live with the characters not being as good as long as the world building is! 😀
Oh that is good actually. I read Small Angry Planet so long ago now I can’t remember the finer details of what happened! 🙂
Thanks. ❤️
