These Broken Stars

Secrets, space, socialites, soldiers, stars, and so much angst/stress/relief/ALL THE FEELINGS!

I had low expectations for These Broken Stars because I’m judgy and judged the cover. I thought it was going to be a silly love story but it wasn’t, it was so great and so much more then what I anticipated.

This story is told from Lilac’s and Tarver’s POV’s through switching chapters as well as random pages of Tarver being interviewed that really made me love the book even more, mixed media in sci fi is my favourite.

“Where will I sit?” Sit? Why, on this comfortable chaise lounge I’ve carried here for you in my pocket, Your Highness, so glad you asked. I clamp my mouth shut, struggling not to say it aloud.”

Lilac is so damn amazing and if I ever get into any survival situation I hope I can be 10% as badass as her. Lilac is strong and deep, deeper then I was expecting from the richest girl in the universe. She knows herself, her heart, and how to make the tough decisions.

Tarver is a soldier who has climbed the ranks extremely fast to become a major and is stuffed into the socialite world he doesn’t believe in. Tarver is a smart-alec, a perfect gentlemen, and a sweetheart. As weird as those combo’s sound they created the most interesting character.

  • Smartassary
  • Creepy Lost vibes
  • Space Survival Story anyone?!

5/5 Stars

The love a few things about this book,

One – The characters and how they meet. So well done. Who wouldn’t want to meet someone at gunpoint in a crowded military bar?

Two –  the WORLD!

Nothing makes a sci fi more amazing for me then being able to see a whole universe, different cultures and worlds all impacted by the same evil corporation and effecting them in different ways.

This book follows two new main characters on the world of Avon a few years after the first book. Avon isn’t a finished world, still being terraformed it’s not stable and the military presence has caused rebel groups to form, just wanting to be able to feed and teach their children the military has forced them into the swamps of their world under false assumptions.

  • Flynn a rebel with a gentle soul, only wants to protect his people.
  • Lee a captain known for her unrelenting and unfeelingness, doing what ever it takes to get the job done and keep her troops safe.

Both are caught up in something bigger then the two of them and must make the world know what is happening here so they don’t just become another blip on the radar.

“There are no stars, because there are never any stars here, only a thick darkness that rushes down her throat and into her heart. She dreams of drowning.”

I adored Flynn the most, he was caring, hard, and new right from wrong, ready to do the best not only for his own people but for the world. Lee Chase has had a hard life and the loss of her parents hardened and made her into the soldier she is. She see’s what’s going on is all part of something larger and isn’t going to stand by and let a strange force ruin her friends and others lives.

Their Fractured Light

The final in the Starbound series! With Amie and Meagans new series Unearthed coming so soon I thought it was about time I finished off this series and it’s so much fun. Light sci fi space adventure?! GIVE ME ALL OF IT TIMES 100

The last installment didn’t disappoint, I think these two characters are my favourite of the 3 pairs.

Sofie is from Avon and helped Flynn in the last book. I didn’t read the synopsis so I was really surprised and happy that she was a main. Sofia’s had a hard life, her dad dying horribly because of Le Roux industries she’s set to use what she has to bring the man himself down and what she has is badassary.

Sofia’s a sweet talker, a charmer, a con artist with finesse and not afraid to throw someone under the bus if it means being able to seek revenge for her father’s murder by proxy.

Let just get this down:

  • Con artist
  • Vengeance plot
  • Flirting
  • SPACE
  • Space ship hijacking
  • To many bullets that hurt my heart

All this needs to be a fave is a hacker right? Well enter Gideon, a secret computer lair, a plot twist connection I didn’t see coming and some well deserved kissing and punching.

Seriously this series just got better with each and every book and I loved all the mains so much.

“Take a bullet for you twice, if I have to.”

The ending grabbed and connected all the plot lines together really well and listening to the audio book gave such a creepy vibe, it makes me want to listen to the first two just because all the narrators were fantastic.

4/5 Stars

The one thing I will say about these books is there’s just something holding me back from being absolutely IN love with it and I can’t decide what it is… maybe it’s having to get use to new characters? It just missed the mark ever so slightly.

Have you read this series? Are you planning too? Who was your favourite couple or character? I think I’m torn between Tarver and Sofia they were just so amazing but everyone’s fantatsic.

Sidenote – Any Sci-fi recs? I’m always up for new sci-fi books *tbr cries in the distance*

  1. Yay! I love Amie Kaufman and this trilogy is brilliant. Have you seen that she and Meagan Spooner have a new book out here in November? I’m so excited!

My last blog post was about sci-fi. 🙂 Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi is great, and I’m currently obsessed with The Prey of Gods by Nicky Drayden.

  2. Great reviews for this series Casey, and oh I am so glad to see you enjoyed these books as well. 🙂 The Starbound series were the first sci-fi books I read, and probably what got me hooked on the genre as well. These Broken Stars is probably my favourite of the three, I’m especially glad to see you loved this one despite your low expectations for it, and Lilac and Tarver are definitely my favourite couple as well.
Oh you’ve really made me want to re-read this trilogy. 😀 ❤

    1. They are a great first sci fi series! I’ll definitly be recommending it to some peeps that aren’t that into scifi yet. Lilac is such an amazing character and I loved that she was so deserving/nice/underestimated. The audios are awesome btw! I only listened to the last but it had all the different narrators in it and the whispers sound so creeeepy! I want to reread the first two on audio soon too.

  3. This series is a lot of fun! But I totally agree with the fact that something is missing. I know I struggled with THIS SHATTERED WORLD because it took so long to reveal just how the plot and not just the characters were connected with THESE BROKEN STARS. And I think half of what was missing in the last two books was the survival aspect from THESE BROKEN STARS. It really added to the feel of that first book

    1. HOW are you so great at summing up the feelings I couldn’t articulate?! I think this is exactly what was missing, the survival aspect in the first and then the slow plot reveal that more then picked up in the other two.
It’s a fun series nonetheless though and I’m super excited for there newest release 😀
