Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people

are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations.

Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies… even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

Man that’s a long synopsis but you know the best thing about it? It doesn’t even begin to describe how truly epic this book was. There is so much hype around this series so to say I was cautious is an understatement. The hype was so big for me I actually under hyped it for myself assuming that because so many people loved it so much it just wouldn’t stand up for me. I was so wrong, Red Rising slammed its way into my favourites and these characters buried their way into my heart.

Darrow, Sevro, the howlers, PAX Why are all these boys after my heart.

I was gripped from page one, from the descriptions of the mines, Darrow’s family, being a hell driver, the vengeance, the mistreatment, the all out rage. The emotions were so well done, I felt like I was right there in the story living it with the characters.

Darrow is a red the lowest class in the galaxy in a world ruled by colour, when he finds out his people have been lied to for hundreds of years something pushes him over the edge and he’s the perfect candidate to destroy the Golds, the upper class that has enslaved his people, made prostitutes out of pinks, forced grays to be their front line and force, greens to be their minds. Golds are hard, cold, and ruthless, controlling the galaxy and destroying all that undermine them.

Darrow fights with rage and love in his heart and will do what it takes to pass the Golds tests and borrow his way into their upper ranks.

Red Rising by Pierce BrownI'm late to the partyMarsPOWERED ARMOURSassy charactersEpic plot lineWar gamesDid I already mention powered armor-

I can’t really say anything else except read it, Darrow is an amazing character, Sevro hilariously scrappy and full of so many great lines, Pax a giant sweetie that will crush your head with his fists. The world building is epic and the language had me wanting to curse people, whispering bloodydamn everytime something big happened in the story.

“Manage your temper” he reminds me, his small voice darkening. “Manners, manners, then burn their bloodydamn house to the ground.”

The setting is epic, the fight scenes SO WELL DONE. I’m probably just telling all you what you already know because I’m probably the last person in the world to pick this book up. I’m so happy I finally read it, I can’t wait to get my hands on book 2&3 and binge them both.

5/5 Stars – Easily one of my favourite sci fi stories I’ve read

Have you read Red Rising or is it on your TBR? Were you expecting it to be as epic as it was? I was blown away with the amount of action.

      1. I’m trying to get my husband to listen to the audiobook but he has lost his faith in me after finishing Empire of Storms hahahaha. I feel pretty bad, it’s the first series he has ever dedicated himself to reading and it left that massive cliffhanger hahahaha.

        1. GET THE FAITH BACK XD EoS has a mean ending and way to long for the next book, super cool he read it though, I can only convince my partner to listen to audios like HP that have a movie adaptation, he has a hard time imagining the characters and world so remember them from the movie makes it easier, he’s missing out on so many of my faves that aren’t movies yet DX

    1. I definitely missed the hype train for it but I’m glad I finally read it! Best thing about being late to the party is not waiting for the next book to be published xD Hope you love it when you start it ❤

    1. Do you read Fantasy? I think it’s really great for non sci fi readers because it’s not to techy like some other sci fi books can be. Just picture a fantasy book on Mars and you’ll be right XD Hope you do love it if you pick it up ❤

    1. I wouldn’t really say it was similar to red queen but I can see how someone could make so similarities XD It is amazing though, the characters are witty and clever and the story is so fast paced. Plus bring down the oppressive government is SUCH a good trope and it’s done really well. Hope you love it when you pick it up ❤

  2. Aw man clearly I need to bump this one up my TBR. It’s just one of those books that I bought and never got around to. I feel like people get so excited over these books but in general there’s a weird lack of hype. I don’t know why I haven’t picked this one up yet!

    1. Right! It’s so action packed, I wasn’t even expecting the War game aspect let alone all the background that was shown so well. I loved the plot, the characters, the writing ❤ It would make an epic movie if done right

  3. Yay! So happy to see you loved this book. This one has been on my TBR for a while, and I actually purchased the eBook a few weeks ago when it went on sale for $1.99 on Kindle! I set a goal for 2017 to read more Sci-Fi…. which has been a big fail so far, but I am going to read this before the end of the year. The Sci-Fi I’ve read thus far has been a little disappointing. I want my Sci-Fi to be action packed, which it sounds like Red Rising was. I also liked your image where you listed what you enjoyed about the book. Great review Casey 🙂

    1. I think you’ll like it! It’s pretty dark and the characters are all so well done and developed. It’s also not romance centered which was good for a change just vengeance and taking down the oppressors xD Thank you ❤
