The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies—humans with extraordinary abilities—who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone..except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice—and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

I LOVE IT

HYPE.

Being a blogger hype is a big thing, we like to yell at everyone about our faves and yell about books that disappointed. Seeing a lot of my fellow book friends disliking/not loving after reading it (and being hyped for it) really makes that book slide lower on my TBR. NOT THIS TIME THOUGH, THANK GOD.

It seems that this book is getting a heap of mixed reactions, on goodreads and in real life. This was the BOTM for a book club and people had either loved it like I did or struggled to finish it *gasp* I’m hoping everyone loves it coz good books = good time but hey not everything’s for everyone.

Things I loved
The characters: I loved how unique and cool the powers all were and how even though there were a fair few central characters we got most of their back stories.
Our main Nova is fantastic, she’s more anti-hero then Villain to me but I guess she does try to assassinate everyone all the time so that’s a bit villain-y… whatever she’s super cool and I’d love to use her power of never sleeping to 1. catch up on reading and 2. put people to sleep when they try to talk to me while I’m reading.

The plot:
Good vs Evil, society being dependent on superheroes, the anarchy that non powered people can cause, what makes a bad person, what make a vigilantes, what happens when the good people do bad in the name of good? (psst it’s still bad)

The Powers:
UNIQUE! I loved the powers, Ruby whose blood crystallising to rubies that she can stab people with, Oscar the disabled hero we all need AND THANK FUCK a super power that isn’t *more* special coz he’s disabled or doesn’t cure his disability. Sketch/Adrian the good POV to out Nova, who can draw things with intention and pull them out of what ever he drew them on (Clary from the mortal instruments can just leave already). Then we have things like, poison seeping from pores, being able to control bees, hornets, wasps, making bombs from nothing and exploding them using air, also basically pennywise/phobia, learning a persons biggest fear and bringing it to life.

The ending:
ouchies gimme the next book nows please

All action, zero(ish) romance:
There’s a few oh he’s hot when he smiles lines and cute will they scenes but other than that we are fighting and plotting not making out! I do have my ships and would like to smoosh their faces together but I’m happy it didn’t take up unnecessary book time.

It has been ages since a books made me want to just keep reading, to not have to check notifications on my phone or watch a new YouTube vid because I can’t bare to pull myself out of the story. Renegades shot to my faves really quickly.

5/5 stars

Have you read this?! Did you love it or hate it? Seems like people are either or which is cool I like books that have a lot of hot or cold it makes me more interesting to see what worked for some and missed for others.

Thanks Pan Macmillan for allowing me a free copy in exchange for an honest review!

  1. I love this book and your review is prefect! I love the unique take on superpowers are well. My favorite characters were Puppeteer and Smokescreen. Puppeteer reminded me so much of the Joker and what little he was in it broke me heart. I expected the ending, but the way it was done, my mouth hit the floor. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book.
